This project was interesting and a challenging one!
Looking at the more grunt of the work I honestly found it quite frustrating and difficult. Our county was Rock County- which is way southern Wisconsin near and in Beloit. I was excited to do this area initially because my older brother went to Beloit College and from what we knew, and what he told us is, that it is a “rougher” area. And I think he was right. It was honestly quite shocking to see how much data was not being reported in that area for certain districts- maybe I was not looking in the right areas, but we found close to none for specifically the special education categories.
I did learn in this project that it is interesting what school do and don’t report/ what data they let the public have access to. Of course I looked at my own schools I went to growing up- and I did gain some perspective for how privileged I grew up and how lucky I was to go to a highly ranked school system. Seeing how my schooling experienced differed to what these kids are getting is a good way to reflect on where I came from. Some schools were similar, but most were completely different than mine. It is good to keep this in mind I think going into my teaching career, because having the bias of where I came from can effect the ones I’m teaching. I have to be there with them, meet them where they are.
