I really enjoy doing interviews. I love answering questions just as much as giving them. This project really was something I was looking forward to- maybe because I want an excuse to call up my past teachers and see how they are doing.
Getting to talk to Mrs. Heil was amazing. She is truly such a respected teacher at Spring Creek Elementary in Northfield. She has made a wonderful reputation for herself and I am so glad she has remained in my life so I have someone to lean on going into this career. Prior to interviewer her though, I was left to just what I remembered of her when I was in kindergarten, and the glimpses I hear from my mom (who works with her). Because in the times we are hanging out with G, we don’t usually talk about work- more casual and friend-like conversation. So being able to just talk about what she’s passionate about and how she started teaching in a way made me feel like one of her students again. I really cherished the openness she had with me, and the honesty about teaching- because it is definitely not always perfect.
I learned from her that teaching is truly a career surrounded by love. You have to love what you’re doing. You have to love the kids you’re working with. You have to love where you are. G is a prime example of this. It was impactful to hear from her that she’s been doing this for so long, but everyday no matter what she is excited to go and teach. It may not be a perfect day or she might have made mistakes- but she still loves herself and what she does. I hope when or if I become and educator that I can have even a sliver of the pure passion she has.
